Fiction Editing and Critique

Hello, internet! Welcome to the homepage of Jesse the Freelance Editor. Nice to meet you. I'd offer to shake your hand but that would be weird.

I primarily edit and critique fiction, with a minor specialization in manuscripts written by ESL/EFL (English as a Second Language / English as a Foreign Language)as well, having been an ESL Teacher for six years and counting.

If you're here for Fiction Editing...

So you have a manuscript. You’ve revised and rewritten it a few - maybe dozens - of times! You're driving yourself crazy perfecting it, picking out small details; adding, subtracting, refining, but now you're getting serious about publishing. To do that, you'll need a fresh set of eyes and someone who'll give you a sincere, honest perspective and opinion on things.

Perhaps you need just one final look-over before shipping off your manuscript to a publishing house, or perhaps you need something a lot more in-depth. Perhaps you aren't sure whether or not the characters are believable, or the plot is convincing. Perhaps your piece is even riddled with problems that you yourself know are there, but can't seem to see after spending months - if not years - staring at the same text.

Does any of this sound like you? If so, you may be in need of an editor. This is where folks like me come in. Just ask yourself these questions:
  • Is your grammar up to snuff?
  • Did you really communicate your ideas as effectively as you wanted?
  • Does your world sound too familiar to some of your influences?
  • Did you use the best noun or verb for the situation? Does it sound natural?
  • Does your narrative sound like you're telling readers, or showing them?
  • Do characters feel like real people, or are they distant?
  • Is your book ready for publication?
If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.
